Pre-workout

Draft copy, awaiting approval (shown on staging only)

Pre-workout powders are mixed with water and taken before training. Most contain caffeine, often alongside ingredients such as beta-alanine or citrulline, and the amounts vary a lot between products. Always check the caffeine per serving and the warnings on the label, and count any other caffeine you have that day, such as coffee or tea. Every pre-workout we stock comes from the brand or its authorised distributor, with the batch and expiry shown on its product page.

Caffeine per serving

Caffeine is the main stimulant in most pre-workouts and the amount per serving is printed on the label. Products described as high-stim usually contain more. Start with the label's directions, do not take more than the label's maximum, and add up caffeine from coffee, tea and energy drinks on the same day.

Read the warnings

Pre-workout labels carry warnings about who should not use the product, for example people under 18, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and people sensitive to caffeine. Read them before buying. If you have a medical condition or take medicines, talk to a doctor first.

Ingredients and amounts

The label lists each active ingredient and its amount per serving. Compare products on these amounts rather than on the name or the claims on the front of the tub. Proprietary blends that do not state individual amounts make comparison harder.

Servings and price per serving

Pre-workout scoops are small, so a tub can hold many servings. Divide the price by the number of servings per tub to compare products; our product pages show the price per serving once the servings are recorded from the label.

Flavour and mixing

Mix one serving with the amount of water the label suggests. Some ingredients dissolve slowly, so shake well and drink it soon after mixing.

Read the label before you buy

  • The marketer or importer's name, address and FSSAI licence number.
  • For imported tubs, an Indian importer sticker with the same details.
  • The batch number, manufacture date and expiry date.
  • Caffeine per serving and the label warnings.

Timing

Most labels suggest taking a serving before training. If caffeine affects your sleep, avoid taking it late in the day.

Storage

Keep the lid closed and the tub dry; powders with citrulline or electrolytes can clump if moisture gets in.
